Embargo on Poverty Alleviation Fund Lifted

Fri, 12 Dec 2003 Source: --

The Government has lifted the embargo on the disbursement of the Poverty Alleviation Fund imposed about a year ago. Miss Joyce Mildred Aidoo, Gomoa District Chief Executive (DCE), explained that the embargo was imposed to afford the government an opportunity to assess the impact of the fund on the lifestyles of the beneficiaries.

She expressed regret that some of them misapplied their loans and said “No wonder, they are finding it difficult to repay the loans” .Addressing a farmers and fishermen's forum at Gomoa Obiri, near Apam, she said the government had decided to disburse the fund to groups instead of individuals.

The DCE expressed concern about the decline in farming and fishing activities in the area and advised them to form co-operatives to benefit from the fund to boost their businesses. Miss Aidoo urged them to desist from starting bushfires, indiscriminate felling of trees and unapproved methods of fishing to protect the environment to ensure sustainable development.
