Emili –Bazeh Regent commended for carving police crown

The regent of Emli-Bazeh, Togbega Tusah Godwin has been praised for being the first Ghanaian Police officer and a Ghanaian to curve the official Police Crown. At a young age of 20 years, Godwin Tusah was enlisted into the Ghana Police Service in 1963 by commander Esando at the Police Training College.

Mr. Tusah passed out in 1964, which was the time that Dr Kwame Nkrumah wanted the colonial Police Emblem withdrawn and a newly design independence police emblem hoisted .

Speaking in an interview with this paper, Togbe Tusah said “commander Esando informed me about the decision of Dr Kwame Nkrumah to change the Gold Coast Police Crown.

Since I was a wood carver (artisan) by profession I was told by the instructor at the Police Training College on the orders of Dr Kwame Nkrumah, first president of Ghana to go to the flagstaff house to perform my duty. At that time, chief superintendent Teye, director at the Police workshop and commissioner Arday at the service workshop were with me and encouraged me to deliver my best “.

They gave me only three months to finish else they would resort to employing the services of Dr Charles of England who designed the colonial police crown to do the job. However that was not the idea of DR Nkrumah who wanted a Ghanaian to gain that honor of developing a police crown. I was led to the Police Workshop to start my project and instead of three months I finished in one week to the surprise of all including the first president of Ghana.

He noted that “when I presented the curved crown to Dr Nkrumah, he ordered me through a special ceremony to lower the colonial police crown and raise the newly curved crown depicting the independence of the Ghana Police Service. After the ceremony, he ordered the commanders to promote me from my position but this never happened until the overthrow of Dr Kwame Nkrumah. I then decided to quit the police service. I wrote a resignation letter to that effect.

I then left for my village where I engaged in farming till date. When the NLC came to power, General Acheampong invited me to rejoin the police service but I refused and decided to concentrate on my farming. Togbe Tusah expressed love for the Ghana Police service which he said has carved a niche for itself as a protector of human life properties and ensuring sanity in all spheres of life. In spite of his tremendous contribution to the nation Togbe Tusah is today being persecuted by some people bordering his traditional area attempting to claim his kingship land and everything that belongs to him. I was nearly killed when some group of people attacked my town, Emli-Bazeh and put a lorry tire around my neck in an attempt to kill me but thank God and some Police officials I was saved
