Major-Gen Arnold Quainoo, acting chairman of the National Commission on Culture has asked the Ministry of Education to assist the Ghanaian publishing industry by insisting that the bulk of educational materials should be Ghanaian originated to reduce reliance on foreign publishers and textbooks, writes the Business & Financial Times.

Gen Quainoo said if national authorship and publishing are to be protected and stimulated, then prolong dependencies on foreign books and publishers and mass photo-copying must be eliminated.

In an unrelated issue, one of the grievances of the ongoing strike by University lecturers centre on their book allowance of $500 to enable them purchase foreign books. It is on this score that the sceptics argue that if each of the PhD's earned by Ghanaians were converted into books, there will be a marked decrease in the current reliance on foreign authored books.
