The President of the Ghana Association of Women's Welfare (GAWN), Mrs Gloria Aryee, has called on individuals and NGO's to support and encourage girls living in rural communities to undergo vocational training to make them self reliant, especially when they become mothers.
She said the line with the Educational Reform Programme the government has established a number of vocational schools in many communities in rural areas and impressed on parents to send their female children to such school
This was one contained in a speech read on her behalf at a days's seminar on traditional practices that affects the health of women and children at the Wa.
The seminar which was attended by traditional birth attendants and "wanzams" (male circumcisers) had the objective of making the participants aware the dangers associated with female circumcision and widowhood rites Mrs. Aryee said women have great potentials to contribute to the development of their communities and called on all to assist them to fully develop their potentials.
The Wa District Chief Executive, Naa Seidu Braimah, who was the guest of h speaker said the Wa District Assembly would soon embark on a programme to educate community leaders and women groups in the area.
He warned that anyone caught practising female circumcision would be made to face the full rigors of the law.
