Entrepreneur calls for educative songs

Madam Jane Amerley Oku, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Janok Foundation, a community-based organisation at Sabon Zongo has called for improved environmental sanitation and hygiene education in schools.

This, she said would ensure a good state of health of the pupils.

She said good hygiene contributes significantly to the reduction and prevention of waste and sanitation related problems such as cholera, malaria, typhoid and also enhances school attendance.

Madam Oku made the call when her foundation in partnership with Global Neighbourhood Development Organisation, a non-governmental organisation, launched a pilot programme on segregation of waste at Bukhare Islamic School at Laterbiokorshie in Accra to educate pupils on the importance of preserving the environment.

Three schools that benefitted from the education were Da-Awatul Islamic, Presbyterian and Laterbiokorshie One and Two Schools.

Madam Oku said children as future leaders they should know some of the challenges facing the country especially about the environment.

The CEO said her foundation aims at reaching school children in the Ablekuma Central District with the message on the significance of the environment to help reduce the spate of environmental challenges.

Sheikh Armiyawo Shaibu, Greater Accra Regional Manager of Islamic education Unit who launched the programme congratulated the organisers for bringing the education to the doorsteps of the Muslim children on the need to preserve the environment and raise environmental consciousness among them.

He called for more civic education on environmental sanitation in schools and commitment from stakeholders to ensure compliance and regular education on hygiene.

Mr Godson Cudjoe Voado, Principal Programme Officer of Environmental Protection Agency said it is necessary for the nation to find ways of improving the social cultural and economic condition of the environment to enhance the health of the people.

The foundation presented to each school, three litter bins and hand washing materials for free.
