Former New Patriotic Party presidential aspirant and member of the communications team of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kojo Nsafoa Poku, says the proposal by former Vice President Mahamadu Bawumia, to distribute national appointments evenly across constituencies could address long standing frustrations within the party base.

In an interview on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, he explained that the proposal would ensure every constituency benefits from national level appointments instead of a selected few.

According to him, Bawumia’s proposal focuses on the roughly 7,000 appointments available at the national level.

He said about 3,000 of these could be deliberately distributed across the country’s 276 constituencies to ensure fair representation.

“If you make about 3,000 out of the 7,000 appointments available to the constituencies, then you are looking at more than ten per constituency,” he said.

“That way every constituency will at least get a fair share,” he added.

Nsafoa Poku argued that some constituencies currently receive no national appointments at all under the ruling National Democratic Congress, leaving Members of Parliament as the only representative from their areas.

“In some areas the MP is the only one there. If the MP doesn’t get support, the constituency gets nothing,” he said.

He described the proposal as an innovative way to ensure fairness and reduce dissatisfaction among party members at the grassroots.

He said the enthusiasm that once drove young people into political movements in Ghana was rooted in struggles for national causes and political change.

He, however, noted that many grassroots members today question what they gain from years of participation as they see others rise quickly through political ranks due to connections with people in power.

“You have people who have worked for the party since 1992 and their lives have not changed. Meanwhile others who came later have moved ahead because of politics,” he said.

According to him, this situation has led to a new breed of young members who are less motivated by political ideals alone.

“They look at their parents and say they will not go into politics with the same zeal as they ask what is in it for them,” he said.

Nsafoa Poku stated that addressing such concerns through policies and a fair distribution of opportunities could help maintain the commitment of party members to strengthen the political system.
