Essarkyir Water supply system almost complete

Construction works on the 20.04 million Euros, Essarkyir water supply system project in the Central Region, is about 95 per cent and would be inaugurated three months ahead of schedule.

This came to light when Board members of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), led by its Chairman, Mr Arnold Sakyi, inspected the project site at the weekend to ascertain the progress of work.

The project, which started in September 2012, is being executed by Messrs Denys NV the contractor, Ecobuild –Royal Consult the Consultant, and GWCL, is designed to produce a maximum of more than three million gallons of water per day for a target population of more than 185,000.

The project which has a contractual time of 30 months, include the building of a raw water intake and weir on the okye- Nakwa river.

It would also provide a conventional water treatment plant including a high lift pumping station, laying of 42 kms of transmission pipeline, laying of 10 kms distribution pipelines and construction of four water reservoirs, made up three new ones at Otuam, Mbroboto and Kokodo.

The water reservoir at Mumford would be renovated to cater for more than 30 communities in the Gomoa West and Ekumfi districts.

In addition, 45 standpipes are being constructed for the beneficiary communities including Essarkyir, Otuam, Mumford, Mbroboto, Adansi, Essuehyia, Gomoa Antseadze, Odumase, Ekotsi Ekupoano, Kokodo and Eyisam.

Mr Sakyi expressed concern about the activities of road contractors around the project site, which has led to the destruction of some pipelines.

Mr Gerry Van Crey, Project Manager of Denys NV, said all the civil and mechanical works on the project have been completed, and that test transmission has begun.
