A trader at the Agbogbloshie Market in Accra, Doris Yeboah, shared how she was able to acquire a house for herself and her children through the sale of cocoyam leaves, popularly known as 'kontomire’, for the past 25 years.

During her interview with GhanaWeb TV on Everyday People, Doris Yeboah shared that she never had the opportunity to further her education beyond the basic six level due to her father’s early demise.

Narrating her story, she said that while in school, she dreamed of becoming a nurse, teacher, or lawyer. However, when she couldn't continue her schooling, she decided to start a business to support herself, leading her to the 'kontomire' business.

“Times were very hard for my mother, so I couldn't attend school. I decided to get some items and sell them at the market. Back then, the market was thriving. I had dreams of becoming a nurse, teacher, or lawyer, but my mother couldn't support me, and my father passed away when I was very young. I had to carve out my own path. So, I started taking goods on credit to sell at the market and paid for them later. I continued this until I had my children," she narrated in Twi.

A proud Doris revealed how beneficial the business has been to her family.

"I can proudly say that since I started selling 'kontomire', I have been able to build a house where I live with my children and support their education."

Regarding single motherhood, Doris stated, "Yes, I am a single mother taking care of them. Their father has abandoned them. I do everything for them."

She added that two of her children have passed away, leaving her with two who are currently in school.
