Day in and day out, the population in Accra keeps increasing as several youths move from rural areas to urban parts so they won’t miss out on the opportunities the cities offer.
Perfect Vedomon, after completing senior high school in 2018, took the bold step of raising money on his own to fund his tertiary education.
Speaking on Everyday People with GhanaWeb's, Eugenia Diabah, Perfect said he engaged in a couple of jobs in the Volta Region, but no matter how hard he worked, he wasn’t earning enough money to save for school.
Unable to thrive in the situation, he decided to move to Accra in 2020 to achieve his goal.
“A few years ago, I was not in Accra; I was in the Volta Region. Things are moving better within Accra than in the deprived areas, so we needed to move ahead. You know, as a man, you have to look for something for yourself to live a better life. I completed SHS in 2018. I engaged in different jobs in the Volta Region, but I felt that they were not paying. That’s why I moved to Accra,” he said.
“I came to Accra purposely to go to school, but you have to raise some funds for yourself and be financially okay before going to school. I have been over here for a while—for four years. I was introduced to this business through a friend who is now my brother,” he told the reporter.
His arrival in Accra landed him a job as a sweatpants vendor, which he was introduced to by a friend and has been peddling for four years.
His decision to leave his family and hustle in Accra began to be meaningful. This is because, after four years of being resilient and determined, he has bought some university forms and raised enough money to cover the expenses of his first year in school.
“I have raised enough money to take me to school. I have already bought my forms and am waiting for admission. It’s not that my parents can’t afford to pay my fees. I am not the only child they are taking care of. Even though they are supportive, I can’t fully depend on them," he said.
Perfect Vedomon says he wants to be a business guru and that one of the reasons he’s going to school is to establish connections, not just to obtain a degree.
