Ewes and Ashantis are not rivals -Fugah

Kumasi, May 3, GNA - Togbe S.K. Fugah, Chief of the Ewe community in Kumasi, has described the notion in certain quarters that Ewes and Ashantis were rivals as unfortunate and untrue.

He said contrary to that conception, Ewes and Ashantis were allies and this is reflected in the inter-marriages that exist between Ashantis and Ewes and coupled with the fact that members of the two ethnic groups are able to permanently reside and work peacefully together either in the Ashanti or the Volta regions.

Togbe Fugah made the observation when a five-man delegation called on the Voltarian Co-ordinating Council (VCC), during their quarterly meeting in Kumasi on Monday to inform them of burial arrangements of the late Madam Celestine Dede Kartey Dokli, mother of Major Courage Quashigah (rtd), Minister of Health.

She died on March 18 at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH). Togbe Fugah, who is also chairman of the VCC, expressed the condolence of the VCC and the Ewe Chieftaincy Council to the bereaved family and assured them that they would provide all the necessary assistance to ensure that the remains of the 78-year-old Madam Dokli were laid to rest peacefully.

He said it was a step in the right direction to decide to bury Madam Dokli in Kumasi, since she had lived virtually all her life in Kumasi and Ashanti has become her second home.

Mr S.A. Adzakey, leader of the delegation said the burial has been scheduled for Saturday, May 7 at the Ayigya Evangelical Presbyterian (EP) Church cemetery after a burial service at the Protestant Chapel of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
