Dr. Clement Apaak, Deputy Ranking Member of the Education Committee of Parliament
The debate surrounding President Nana Akufo-Addo’s flagship Free Senior High School (SHS) policy continues to intensify, with fresh criticism from Dr. Clement Apaak, Member of Parliament for Builsa South.
In an interview on Starr Today on Starr FM with Joshua Kodjo Mensah, Dr. Apaak argued that the President’s true legacy in education is not the introduction of Free SHS but the debts it has accumulated, along with challenges that undermine its success.
“Let’s be honest, Free SHS is not Akufo-Addo’s legacy. It is the indebtedness to Free Senior High School, as the available information clearly shows—nothing more, nothing less,” Dr. Apaak stated firmly.
His remarks highlight the financial strain the program has allegedly placed on the government and its stakeholders, including the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).
Dr. Apaak disclosed that the recent delay in releasing SHS results was due to the government owing WAEC a staggering 118 million Ghana cedis.
He suggested that this was not an isolated issue, citing a history of examination-related challenges since the policy’s inception.
“The President failed to mention that examination malpractices have skyrocketed since the first batch of students under this policy sat for their exams in 2020,” he noted.
