An ecstatic Ghanaian, in a viral social media video, proudly displayed how the Ghanacard helped him board a flight back home.

From the airport in Douala, Cameroon, the man, who said he was struggling to return home, announced that his journey had been made possible through his Ghanacard, which he happily displayed alongside his flight boarding pass.

"The Ghanacard is actually a passport. The doubting Thomases should understand. I am currently at the Douala Airport in Cameroon, I am travelling back to Ghana, and I used my Ghanacard," he said in the video.

"Kudos to the NPP Government, kudos to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. May God richly bless Ghana and may God richly bless Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia," he added.

Ghana's national biometric identity card, also known as the Ghanacard, contains a machine-readable chip, making it function as an international travel document approved by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).

Due to the lack of an electronic visa services agreement between Ghana and many countries, Ghanaians are currently unable to use the Ghanacard to travel to countries requiring proof of entry visas.

However, for countries Ghanaians can travel to without entry visas, such as West African countries, holders of the Ghanacard can use their cards to travel.

Additionally, from any airport in the world, Ghanaians who have lost their passports can use their Ghanacards to board a flight back to Ghana.

Since its introduction over a year ago, some members of the opposition NDC have expressed doubts about the Ghanacard's ability to function as an international travel document. However, several Ghanaians have used it to travel back to Ghana aboard various flights from all corners of the globe.
