Professor Dzidonu said private institutions are helping the country to build its human capital
The President of Accra Institute of Technology (AIT), Professor Clement K. Dzidonu has made a passionate appeal to the Akufo-Addo’s government to expand tertiary education budget to cover private institutions as well.
He said the private institutions are helping the country to build its human capital and expertise in order to fuel the development and transformation of the economy.
To ensure equity, he added that government must strategically invest in both public and private higher education system to generate the requisite and critical skills needed for rapid economic development.
“There is no doubt that a well resourced higher education system by the government as part if an expanded-mandate for higher education system can play can serve an effective instrument for driving and accelerating Ghana’s economic and social development in an age where global competitiveness of a nation ends very much on its ability and capacity to develop and deploy a highly skilled knowledge workforce, innovation systems and technologies to drive its economy,” he stressed.
Dr. Dzidonu made these remarks when he addressed the gathering at the 21st Graduation of AIT over the weekend in Accra.
For her part Mrs. Dr. Joyce Aryee who was a guest speaker at the event congratulated the graduands for working hard to acquire knowledge and skills in electrical and electronic engineering, computer engineering, computer science, information technology and business administration.
She said though the country can boast of many tertiary institutions (private and public universities), there was still a need to have more of such institutions to accommodate the nation’s growing population.
Though, she congratulated the nation’s effort for maintaining quality and standard of education, she pleaded with the education authorities to do more on planning, in order to meet national developmental goals and aspirations.
Dr. Aryee urged the graduating students to continue seeking knowledge and opportunities in other areas of their endeavours.
She further congratulated the graduands for studying hard to obtain degrees in various disciplines at the institution.
Five persons graduated with Doctor of philosophy (PhDs), another five as PhD Candidates and two others obtaining Masters Computer Science (MSc), Engineering.
Also, 153 graduands from the main campus were awarded various degrees in Accounting, Business Administration, Computer Science, Education Administration, Hospitality, Information Technology, Network Computing and Multimedia Communication.
Among the figure, 26 obtained first class honors, 40, second class, upper division and 87 persons also obtained second, lower division.
61 graduands from the AIT Open University Malaysia, were also honored with Bachelor degrees at the event.
