Scores of unemployed graduate teachers on Monday, December 2, 2019, picketed the Ministry of Education to voice their grievances to government.
The visibly furious protesters warned there could be series of robbery cases in 2020 if government fails to post them before the end of this year.
The enraged graduates disclosed to Ghanaweb that the ministry has failed to fulfill its promise of addressing their grievances hence, they intend sleeping at the ministry of education until their demands have been met.
The teachers claimed they have been home for two years awaiting their postings but the narrative remains same as the ministry seems unconcerned about their plights.
One of the aggrieved teachers said, “The government should expect more robbery cases in 2020 and its subsequent years. I am tired of staying at home. Why would the government employ 2018 badge and leave we the 2017 badge at home, what crime have we committed.”
“We are not going anywhere till they post us… We have met all their requirements, we have our license, certificate from our Colleges of Education and national service certificate. This is all it takes for us to be posted yet they won’t employ us,” another said.
Responding to the threats and demands, Isaac Asiedu Odei, Deputy Public Relations Officer at the Ghana Education Service assured the protesters that the ministry will find a solution to the issue.
“These students picketing here were scheduled to complete school in 2017 but most of them were not around during the posting, some were either pregnant or deferred their courses, which I believe has also contributed to their current situation. I don’t think threats of robbery will solve this because at the long run they will be tagged as criminals which the security agencies in this country will deal with them accordingly,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Education Service (GES), in a statement, announced that it has commenced the process of posting teachers who completed the Colleges of Education in 2018.
The Education Service stated that only trainees who have written and passed the teacher licensure examination and have completed their national service are eligible for employment.
"Candidates who duly applied online will be shortlisted and postings affected by the end of November 2019," the GES said in its statement.
"We also wish to state that there will be a consideration for university graduates with basic education and early childhood certificates who have passed the licensure examination and completed national service as well," the statement added.
