Exponential coronavirus recoveries a result of increasing cases - GHS

The Director-General of the Ghana Health Service has provided Ghanaians with some explanations as regards the increased coronavirus recovery figures the country has recorded so far.

He said the increasing number of recoveries are as a result of the equally rising numbers in the coronavirus case count, which means that more recoveries are expected to be recorded soon.

According to Dr. Patrick Kuma Aboagye, as per the usual sickness trend, anyone who reports sick or contracts the Novel Coronavirus is expected to recover or see improvement in health condition within three weeks. Thus, the deaths so far do not explicitly mean that people just die at the onset of contracting the virus.

Speaking at the Minister’s press briefing, Tuesday May 19, 2020 he said; “When it comes to recoveries as I’ve been saying when someone is ill, if you do not die…at the end of the disease, within three weeks you’ll recover and I’m sure some of us have the experience…so from the beginning when we had one, two, three, we were not expecting major recoveries in the first one month of which they’ll come but as you have more cases, through data, you should expect more cases recovering. That’s why we’re having an exponential increase in the number of cases.”

Dr Aboagye expressed profound confidence in Ghana’s situation in the coming days, saying, “Now that the numbers are down, the labs have the opportunity to do more tests and also the follow up tests to endure that we have more recoveries.”

Still on recoveries, he said some regions like Western region and others started recording cases later as compared to other regions thus their recoveries will only hit convincing rates in subsequent weeks.

Ghana’s recovery rate has become a major subject of public debates. Not only has it been doubted by some political figures but has appeared unbelievable to some Ghanaians as well.

But Dr Dr Kuma Aboagye says the number of recoveries only means Ghana is making some solid progress in the fight against the disease as recovery rate now stands at 29.6 percent.
