Accra, Aug. 5, GNA - An Accra Circuit Court on Tuesday imposed a seven million cedis fine on an exporter for assaulting a Police Constable over 5,000 cedis.
Emmanuel Mensah, 48, would in default serve 24 months jail term. Mensah insisted that 5,000 cedis had been taken from him when he was detained at the Korle-Bu Police Station for assaulting a driver, who had knocked down a pedestrian at Bukom, in Accra.
Mensah became offended and attacked Constable Amadu Shaibu, who had asked him to enquire from the officer, who was on duty before he took over.
Police Inspector Emmanuel Boison told the court that on July 26, Mensah was arrested and detained at the Korle Bu Police Station for assaulting a driver, who had knocked down a pedestrian.
At 1430 hours when he was being released from the cells, Mensah asked Constable Shaibu to return his 5,000 cedis, which he claimed he had declared when he was being detained.
When the cells records were checked, the amount had not been recorded. Prosecution said Constable Shaibu told Mensah to check from the officer, who was on duty before he took over but Mensah became offended and hit the Constable on the eyebrow and followed it up with slaps. Mensah pleaded not guilty.
