Wa, Dec 31, GNA- Dr. Felix Ahorsu, Acting Medical Director of the Wa Regional Hospital on Friday appealed to the government to re-negotiate with the Cuban government to extend the working period of Cuban Doctors from two to four years.

He said the current period of two years was too short for doctors to acclimatize and put up their best in the country.

Dr. Ahorsu made this appeal during a ceremony to officially welcome 20 new Cuban doctors into the Upper West Region.

He said most of them do not speak English and there was the need for them to use one year for language proficiency to be able to communicate effectively with their patients and people in the communities in which they would serve serving.

Six out of the 20 doctors have been posted to the Wa Regional Hospital, four to the Jirapa St. Joseph's Hospital and two each for the Nandom, Lawra, Nadowli and Tumu Hospitals in the Upper West Region, while two others are posted to Bole in the Northern Region. He said the Cuban medical brigade has over the years contributed tremendously to the health status of the region and promised to create a congenial atmosphere for them to live and work happily.

Mr Sahanun Mogtari, Upper West Regional Minister commended the Cuban government for their continuous support and appealed to the health authorities to regulate the annual leave of Cuban doctors to avoid a situation where they all go on leave at the same time without any replacement.

He also appealed to health authorities to take advantage of the expertise of Cuban doctors in Caesarian operations to attach Ghanaian doctors to under study them.

Dr. Livan Bencomo, leader of the Cuban medical brigade, promised on behalf of his colleagues to put up their best to achieve the purpose for which they were brought into the country. 'We shall do everything possible to uplift the name our country through committed service and selflessness', he said.
