SFO MUST PROBE SOURCE OF MONEY Yells Aliu's campaign coordinator

MR. GEORGE Ayisi-Boateng, Ashanti and Brong Ahafo Campaign Coordinator for Vice- President, Alhaji Aliu Mahama, has reiterated his concern about what he calls "moneycracy"?explained to mean "a capital producing conspiracy" to influence decisions on the political front. It is an emerging phenomenon on the Ghanaian political scene where money is used to influence major decisions on the political scene.

But Ayisi-Boateng says something ought to be done about this development in order to bring some sanity into Ghanaian politics.

He has said the Ghanaian voter needs to be orientated against the practice of influencing delegates in the choice of a candidate in a particular election.

"We need orientation against vote buying," he said during a Hello FM radio programme on Wednesday evening.

He said "moneycracy", a term he coined in 2005, is a serious phenomenon which needed to be checked before it affected the political trend in Ghana.

According to Mr. Ayisi-Boateng, if unchecked, potential people who could contribute in diverse ways towards the development of democracy would shy away from politics.

He appealed to the Ministry of National Orientation, National Commission on Civic Education (NCCE), and Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) to take up the challenge and correct the trend.

"The NCCE has a vital role to play in checking this creeping canker," the anti-moneycracy campaigner suggested.

Ayisi-Boateng has also suggested that the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) must investigate and establish the source of all monies being channelled into political activities.

He said the institution of Code of Ethics by some political parties was enough to check "moneycracy".

The campaign coordinator indicated that the proposed state funding of political parties aside, political parties should take advantage of the conducive business environment created by the Kufuor administration, and venture into commercial activities such as farming and transport to ensure regular sources of income to fund their activities.

?It would make constituency chairmen and executives self-sufficient to avert such influence by aspirants,? he noted.
