FAWE promoting girl child education in Upper East

Navrongo (U.E/R), Sept 26, GNA - FAWE Ghana Chapter, an International non-governmental organisation (NGO) with support from UNICEF, organised a day's workshop to sensitize parents on the importance of girl child education, at Navrongo in the Upper East Region.

It also sought to give women the needed capacity to be able to take active part in national policy making, mobilise resource persons to draw radio advocacy programmes to sensitize the people on the significance of girl child education.

The workshop is part of the NGO's five-year programme, being implemented in 12 districts in the Upper West, Upper East and Northern Regions, to promote education through radio advocacy programmes and relaying information to development partners.

The resource persons who are heads of departments and religious groups working in the area of welfare of women and knowledgeable in sexual abuse issues, violence, drug abuse, forced marriages and sexual harassment would educate the public on how such problems could make the girl child vulnerable and deny her of formal education. Participants discussed the role of the district assemblies and traditional leaders in educating the girl child.

Participants called assemblies and traditional rulers to play active roles in formulating of policies to create platforms for the promotion of the education of girls. The General Manager of FAWE Ghana Chapter, Mr. Picconius Ofoe Siameh called for support for programmes of the association to help promote gender equity.
