FDA revokes marketing authorisation of 'Male Silkworm Recharger'

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has revoked the marketing authorisation for the sale and distribution of Male Silkworm Moth Nourishing Liquid, known as ‘Recharger.’

Post market surveillance activity conducted by the FDA revealed that the product has been adulterated with Vardenafil (a chemical used to treat erectile dysfunction).

A statement issued by the FDA and copied to the Ghana News Agency, stated that the decision was made because that information, was not provided at the time of registration,

The FDA said the product was registered as a herbal medicinal product indicated for male vitality.

“It is important to indicate that an adverse effect of Verdanafil has serious health implications which include; Cerebrovascular haemorrhage (bleeding in the brain) which can lead to strokes, Transient Ischaemic (heart) attack, Palpitations and serious Cardiovascular events, including sudden cardiac death and Priapism – sustained erection for long periods, which can lead to impotence,” the statement said.

The public is, therefore, advised not to patronise the product, whiles the FDA took steps to recall it from the market and apply the necessary regulatory actions. .

The FDA assured the public that it would not relent in its effort in ensuring public health and safety at all times.

It urged members of the public to give information on persons dealing in the Male Silkworm Moth Nourishing Liquid or suspected to be in any practice possible of endangering public health and safety with respect to the FDA’s mandate to contact the FDA through any of the following contact numbers; 0244337235, 0267265087 or 0246809509.
