Former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo (Rtd) (R) and dismissed Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo (L)
Former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo (Rtd) was among several high-profile individuals who testified in favour of the recently dismissed Chief Justice, Gertrude Araba Torkornoo.
Despite her testimony and support, the government proceeded with Justice Torkornoo’s dismissal, a decision Justice Akuffo has since described as “unfair."
She appeared before the Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang-led Committee of Inquiry on August 5, 2025, at 10:17 AM to give her testimony.

Meanwhile, following the committee’s report, President John Dramani Mahama, acting in accordance with Article 146(9) of the 1992 Constitution, has removed Justice Gertrude Torkornoo from office with immediate effect.
The decision was made after the president received the findings of the Committee of Inquiry, established under Article 146(6) of the Constitution, to investigate a petition submitted by Ghanaian citizen Daniel Ofori calling for the Chief Justice’s removal.
