A Nigerian, Okeke Junior, was on Wednesday arrested on charges of distilling a concoction he sold as alcohol. Superintendent Angwubutoge Awuni of the Public Relations Directorate, Police Headquarters, Accra, said on Friday that police received information that some foreigners around Accra New Town were distilling and bottling concoctions they claimed were gin and whisky. He said police from the Panthers Unit arrested Junior in a room in Accra New Town. Junior confessed to receiving the substances used in making the drinks from Nungua in Accra and sending the finished product to Elubo in the Western Region for sale, he said.

According to Superintendent Awuni, police retrieved 43 bottles of Aromatic Schnapps, a quantity of Beefeater Gin and Black Label whisky. He said chemicals found in the room have been sent to the Ghana Standards Board for examination. The police investigation continues to trace others suspected of being involved in the crime. Junior is to be charged before court soon.
