A 23-year-old man has been arrested by the Prampram District police in connection with the sale of fake honey – purported mixture of jaggery and sugar with ghee.

The accused, Abu Adams, a resident of Sukura, a suburb of Accra, was said to have defrauded several people, including police officers, by selling the adulterated honey to them.

According to police preliminary investigations, black seeds oil, sugar and waste food supplement were some of the items the accused person mixed to manufacture the fake honey.

Abu Adams was arraigned before the TDC magistrate court in Tema where he pleaded not guilty of the charges preferred against him; and the court, presided over by Mr. Eric Adjei, granted him bail to reappear later.

According to Inspector Nana Okyere, the prosecutor in the case, on May 5, 2015 some police officers stationed at the Prampram District Police Headquarters, bought honey from the accused, but when it was tasted, it was detected that the stuff was fake.

He maintained that a few weeks later the suspect returned to the police station with intent to sell the concoction when he was identified and arrested.

The accused, the prosecutor posited, admitted selling the adulterated honey to the officers and some unsuspecting members of the public and led the police to where he manufactured it. The above-mentioned items were said to have been found on him.

Adams allegedly moved with a few honey bees in a vessel which he had been using to defraud unsuspecting buyers.
