...Minority MPs to tackle JAK today

Former President J. J Rawlings went into his elements on Tuesday when he addressed students of the London South Bank University in the United Kingdom, when he accused the sitting President of totally mismanaging the affairs of the country.

According to him, the coming into office of President Kufuor and his party in 2004 was through a foul rather than a fair means, as “the presidential election was clearly rigged”.

He announced that following the party’s disagreement with the results of the elections, an action was initiated in the court for redress.

Mr. Rawlings noted that although some officers at the Electoral Commission had attempted to destroy the ballot papers in some ballot boxes, the NDC had taken steps to bring this to the attention of the court to restrain those officers from further destroying the entire ballot papers.

“President Kufuor should prove to the nation how he won the elections; he must prove it,” he fumed.

Ex-President Rawlings was addressing the students on the occasion of the London Black History Season.

Present at the forum included his new darling boy and aspiring presidential candidate of NDC, Dr. Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, Former Foreign Minister, Ambassador Victor Gbeho and former Deputy Defence Minister, Dr. Tony Aidoo.

He maintained that the country had become an international showcase for corruption.

The former President lamented that internationally renowned journalists were in bed with the government and had therefore kept mute on all the corruption that was making rounds in the country.

“You want to make money? Come to Ghana; the judiciary is so corrupt,” he stressed.

Mr. Rawlings disclosed that the out-going Secretary General of the United Nations, Mr. Kofi Anann, had paid him a visit, during which meeting the UN top man registered his displeasure over what he considered an escalation of corruption in the country.

He indicated that President Kufuor had filled the government with mainly Ashantis, which situation some of the Ashantis themselves in the party were not comfortable with.

Meanwhile, the NDC minority in parliament is expected respond to the comments made by the President in Offinso ahead of last Tuesday’s parliamentary by-elections, citing the ex-President for moves to subvert his government.

The Chronicle is privy to credible information that the Alban Bagbin-led minority would be responding to President Kufuor through a press statement later in the day.

The statement is expected to ask President Kufuor to provide evidence to substantiate his allegations against Mr. Rawlings, founder of the NDC.

The group would also express its disappointment at the utterances of the President and possibly advise him to hold in high esteem the high office of the President so as to guard against any impeachment move.

A source told the paper that the minority would also call on the good people of Ghana to put pressure on the President to come out to prove his allegations or discard such utterances and focus on the building of the nation.
