Accra, Oct. 19, GNA - The families of the three prominent urologists who perished in a tragic road accident on the Kumasi-Accra Highway, on August 27, this year, in keeping with Ghanaian tradition, called on President John Agyekum Kufuor at the Castle, Osu, on Wednesday, to say thank you for the state funeral given to their deceased relatives. Professor J. K. M. Quartey, Dr Isaac Kofi Bentsi and Dr Benjamin Osei-Wiafe were returning from an outreach programme at the Sunyani Hospital when the Nissan Patrol vehicle on which they were travelling was involved in the accident.

Nii Owulae Kpakpa Brofonyo II, Ga Akwashong Mantse, who acted as spokesperson, expressed their gratitude to President Kufuor for as he put it, "sharing in our pain and grief and the deserving funeral". He also extended the families' appreciation to all Ghanaians who sympathised with them in varied ways.

Responding, President Kufuor said the government decided to accord the doctors a state funeral because it was convinced that the occasion called for that.

He said the three were a symbol of sacrifice and blessing to the nation adding, "We owed it a duty to do what we did". President Kufuor said the nation should be eternally grateful to them as they made the ultimate sacrifice to bring comfort and relief to those who were suffering and wished that: "The good Lord gives them eternal resting".

Mr Joseph Henry Mensah, Senior Minister, Major Courage Quashigah (retired), Minister of Health and Sheikh I. C. Quaye, Greater Accra Regional Minister, were among those present.
