Family Health establishes first private medical school

The Management of Family Health, a privately owned health institution located at Teshie, a suburb of Accra has established the first ever private Medical School in Ghana.

This follows approval from the National Accreditation Board for the school to be affiliated to the University of Ghana Medical School.

Professor Yao Kwawukume, President of the Family Health Group who announced this in a media briefing in Accra said the school would soon stand out as the centre of excellence in Ghana and beyond the continent because of the programmes lined up to motivate both students and lecturers.

The Family Health Group is already running a hospital, Medical Assistants Training School among others and the establishment of a medical school would raise its amazing performance in the country.

He said apart from bringing in qualified lecturers, his outfit would motivate both lecturers and students to take medical training to the higher level.

The Group President said the duration would be six years, but student would however be awarded Bachelors of Science in Medicine after three years, while they would also pursue a Masters of Philosophy certificate after the sixth year.

Professor Kwawukume said the school would also collaborate with medical schools in the United States, Europe and Asia where students would be privileged to go for elective courses and interact with their counterparts outside the country.

This apart, the Group President said the School has completed a hostel facility that could accommodate about 100 students and a Tim Johnson Library complex that has unique learning tools.

He mentioned telemedicine facilities, where students would have virtual lectures from the US, Europe and India and e-library which covers the whole campus with the use of wifi, hotspots to facilitate access to internet facilities.
