Sunyani, (Brong Ahafo) 9 Sept., The parents of a two-year-old girl whose right arm was amputated after receiving a blood transfusion are demanding 50 million cedis from the Goaso Government Hospital for negligence of duty. The parents have in a letter from their solicitors, Mr. Yaw Wiredu-Peprah, threatened to institute legal action if no response was received from the hospital by October three. The parents are accusing the hospital of negligence of duty. Mr. Michael Boakye, the father, said they were demanding compensation because when Grace was given the blood transfusion on August three, the Enrolled Nurse who administered the transfusion "never visited the child to monitor her progress after the process had ended''. He said the following day, he realised that the right arm on which the transfusion was administered was lifeless. Mr. Boakye claimed that when the attention of the nurse and other medical personnel was drawn to Grace's condition, no action was taken until August five when "my daughter was referred to the Sunyani Regional Hospital. "A week after her admission, the arm began to rot, necessitating the amputation which has maimed my daughter for life", he said mournfully. A medical source at the Goaso hospital confirmed the story but insisted that the parents of Grace allowed relatives ''to hold the hand of the girl during the transfusion contrary to instructions.''
