Begoro (E/R), May 25, GNA - The Member of Parliament for Fanteakwa, Mr Kwadwo Adjei-Addo, has expressed concern about the high rate of self-medication among the people in the District under the "cash and carry" system.

Speaking at the inauguration of the District Health Insurance Scheme (DHIS) at Begoro on Friday, he stated that about 80 per cent of the inhabitants in the District had resorted to self-medication due to their inability to afford hospital fees.

He expressed the hope that the implementation of the NHIS would ensure a level playing field in the health delivery system and urged all and sundry to embrace and register with it.

The Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Council, Dr Samuel Akortey Akor, appealed to the Ghana Health Service to staff hospitals with enough doctors to increase the doctor-patient radio for better health service delivery.

The Fanteakwa District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr Ebenezer Ofoe Caesar, pledged the Assembly's support towards the successful implementation of the NHIS.

He said the Assembly was developing a five-year HIV/AIDS plan to source funds for HIV/AIDS activities in the District.
