Farmer commits suicide over his indebtedness

Sergeant-Krom (W/R), Feb. 3, GNA - The body of Yaw Aponmasu-Anto, a 35-year-old farmer of Sergeant-Krom in the Aowin-Suaman District was on Saturday found hanging on a tree by some women who were returning from their farms.

He was alleged to have committed suicide to free himself from debts he owed some people, including Cocoa Purchasing Clerks in the area. Amponmasu-Anto is said to have been using his dried cocoa beans as collateral for loans he contracted from purchasing clerks. Mr Emmanuel Boateng, the assembly member for the area, who spoke to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), said he assisted the Dadieso Police to convey the body of the deceased to the Enchi Government Hospital. Meanwhile, the Police have begun investigations into the death of Amponmasu-Anto.

In a related development, Madam Akua Pomaa, a 38-year-old farmer, who attempted to commit suicide by drinking an insecticide meant for killing rats, is in critical condition at the Enchi Hospital. Pomaa, who travelled from Kumasi to visit her relatives at Akrodie, near Akontombra-Nkwanta in the Aowin-Suaman district, mixed the insecticide with porridge and drank it.

She was quoted as saying that she took the action as a result of several social problems she had to contend with.
