Farmer jailed two years for indecent assault

Cape Coast, Oct. 22, GNA - A 45-year-old farmer, Yaw Sekyi, from Gomoa Dunkwa near Apam, who attempted to rape his former girlfriend and later chopped off his own penis, was on Friday sentenced to two years imprisonment by a circuit court at Cape Coast for indecent assault. Sekyi, who is to serve his jail term in hard labour, pleaded guilty.

Prosecuting, Chief Inspector Henry Tanor told the court presided over by Mr Mustapha Logoh that, Sekyi and the 48-year-old victim, Abena Oparebea are both farmers from Gomoa-Dunkwa near Apam, were in a relationship but, the woman opted out because, she found out that the convict was a thief.

Chief Inspector Tanor told the court that on the morning of September 18, at about 0800 hours, Sekyi went to Oparebea's farm at "Papa Ayedwe" village near Denkyira Nfuom and attempted to rape her on knifepoint.

The shouts of the woman attracted two men who were working on their farms nearby to her rescue but Sekyi managed to escape into the bush.

He said a search party was organized which later found him in a pool of blood, unconscious in a thicket with his penis chopped off arrested him.

In another development at the same court, a 29-year-old notorious criminal, Nana Beseni, who operates in the University of Cape Coast vicinity, snatching ladies handbags and mobile phones was sentenced to five to years imprisonment in hard labour, for snatching two ladies' handbags. He pleaded guilty to charge and was sentenced accordingly. The same court also remanded Nana Kwame, a 23-year-old labourer from Assin Jakai, who stabbed a taxi driver and attempted to snatch his car from him, until November 5.

Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector Augustine Amonoo told the court on Tuesday, October 19, at about 1900 hours, that Kwame hired the driver, Mr Yaw Mensah, who plies between Cape Coast and Twifo Praso to a nearby village near Jukwa Mfuom.

He said on the way, the accused pulled out a penknife and stabbed the driver in the left arm and shoulder and started to struggle with him in an attempt to snatch the car from him.

Chief Inspector Amonoo said the car veered off the road and landed in a nearby farm, where a farm watchman arrested the accused person when he heard the cries of the driver calling for help.

The prosecutor said the driver is still on admission at the Cape Coast Regional Hospital.
