Asamankese, June 19, GNA - A farmer accused of raping a woman, eight months pregnant, reportedly admitted before the elders of the village and to the police of committing the offence.

But when he was arraigned before the Asamankese Circuit court, Joshua Asare said he was not guilty.

He was then remanded in police custody to re-appear on June 30. Police Inspector D. T. Nartey, prosecuting, told the court that the woman and the accused lived in the same village, Nyankumase, near Osenase. He said on April 4, 2010, at about 2100 hours, when the victim was deeply asleep with her five children, the accused entered the room and finding her lying in bed naked had sexual intercourse with her. After the act, Asare warned her not to disclose her ordeal to anyone, promising to give her an amount of money as capital to trade. But she informed her father of the ordeal she had been through at the hands of the accused.

When Asare was called before the elders of the village, he admitted having raped the woman. A report was then made to the police and he was arrested. In a caution statement to the police he admitted the offence, the prosecutor said.
