Twenty eight farmers and fishermen of the Damgbe West District were on Friday awarded for their immense contributions to the agricultural sector with Mr Michael Borboryu Nartey, 50, emerging the overall best farmer.
Mr Nartey was awarded a certificate a set of furniture, wax prints, bicycle and agro-chemicals during the District's celebration of 23rd National Farmers' Day at Kordiabe in the Greater Accra Region. He cultivates 42 acres of Water Mellon, 10 acres of tomato, seven acres of maize, six acres of cassava, five acres of plantain and one acre of beans.
Mr Nartey who has 150 workers also rear 230 cattle, 56 goats 45 local fowls and 42 sheep.
Madam Theresa Naa Amaley Tagoe, Deputy Greater Accra Regional Minister in a keynote address said the outbreak of avian flu disease and delay of the rains was the major challenge face in the agriculture sector this year.
Madam Tagoe said the government was assisting the small-scale food producers with loan facilities, as agriculture was very significant to the economy.
She urged all farmers especially the youth to take advantage of such loans to improve upon their livelihood while contributing to the national development.
Mr. Michael Adjowerh-Nortey, Dambe West District Chief Executive said the District, which covers two third of the Accra plains has the potentials of becoming the food basket of the country.
Mr. Adjowerh-Nortey said four of the District farmers have been adjudged best in the production of mango, leaf vegetables, rice and cattle.
Food items, dairy product livestock, among others were displayed at the ceremony. Father Andrew Cambell, Parish Priest of Good Shepherd Catholic Church donated a tractor valued over 200 million cedis to the Kordiabe-Tsupa-Dor, farming and marketing association. For his gesture Fr. Cambell was awarded a certificate and citation.
