Farmers' Day is celebrated annually on the first Friday of December in Ghana to honour the contributions of farmers and fishers to national development and food security.

The day is set aside to appreciate the hard work and dedication of farmers and the roles they play in sustaining livelihoods and promoting economic stability across the country.

The 2025 celebration themed, “Eat Ghana, Grow Ghana, Secure the Future" emphasises national food security, agricultural self-sufficiency, and sustainable job creation.

Ahead of the event in Ho, GhanaWeb puts the spotlight on some remarkable women who have been recognised as past winners of Farmers’ Day awards.

Efua Frimpongmaa

Efua Frimpongmaa made history in 2004 when, at 75 years old, she became the first woman to win the National Best Farmer award.

Her recognition was for her sustained efforts and remarkable contributions to the agricultural sector.

Farmers Day: December 5 declared Public Holiday
As part of her award, Efua received a fully furnished house, which she could build at any location of her choice.

Charity Akortia

In 2023, Charity Akortia, a 57-year-old farmer from Agona West District in Ghana's Central Region, was crowned the National Best Farmer during the National Farmers’ Day celebration.

She received GH¢1 million along with other honors and recognition from the then Vice President Dr Mahamadu Bawumia, who pointed out the vital role of farmers and agriculture in Ghana’s economy.

Mary Tweneboa

Mary Tweneboa, a 51-year-old farmer from Praaso, was adjudged the 2024 Best Farmer for Asante-Akim Central Municipality.

At the 40th edition of the National Farmers’ Day, held at Boatengkrom, she received a tricycle, a refrigerator, and farm inputs in recognition of her dedication.
