Abu Arafat, a vulcaniser from Jasikan in the Oti Region who is on remand at the Ho Central Prisons collapsed in court on Wednesday for not eating at that time of the day.

Arafat, was observing the Ramadan fast being on remand over his involvement in a narcotics case with five others.

During the court session presided over by Mrs Priscilla Dikro Ofori, Abu fell off his bench and was whisked out.

About 30 minutes later when his case was called, the prosecution pleaded with the court to provide the accused with a chair as he was too weak to stand in the dock.

Abu was offered the seat but few minutes into the hearing of the case, he started shouting “my heart… my heart”, and was taken back.

A can of Malta Guinness drink was provided, which he hastily gulped down.

Moments later, Abu regained strength and was seen conversing with others in the room.

According to the facts of the case, two of Abu’s accomplices were on November 03, 2017, arrested at a checkpoint at Have in the south of Afadzato Mountain, transporting 876 parcels of compressed slabs of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp concealed in sacks of oranges on two tricycles.

The prosecution said when they were arrested, the two identified Abu and three others who were closely following the tricycles in another vehicle as owners of the contraband.

They were all arrested and handed over to the Drug Law Enforcement Unit of the Volta Regional Police Command for investigations while the exhibits was sent to the Police forensic laboratory in Accra for testing.

The substances were confirmed to be Cannabis Sativa, a narcotic drug, with a net weight of 767.079 gram.

The case has been adjourned to Tuesday, 14 May 2019.
