Accra, Dec. 14, GNA - Fifteen soldiers were on Tuesday awarded City and Guilds of London Certificates after a year's course at the Ghana Armed Forces Electrical, Mechanical and Engineering Training School (EMETS) at Burma Camp in Accra.
The course is the first of its kind to be run by the school since it gained recognition from City and Guilds of London after 39 years in existence. They all scored 100 per cent pass in Engine and Chassis Systems, Mathematics, Science and Commercial Vehicle system practical. Corporal Keddy Mensah was adjudged the best student when he scored distinction in Engineering system and credit in the remaining subjects.
Brigadier Wallace Gbedemah, Director General, Personnel and Administration at the General Headquarters of the Ghana Armed Forces said the course is important because of the equipment put in the care of soldiers by the nation with its scarce foreign exchange.
He said acquiring certificates is not the end of their job but rather the translation of the knowledge acquired into practical service of the Armed Forces. Brig. Gbedemah congratulated the soldiers for coming out with good results and urged them to work harder to acquire more laurels.
Captain (GN) Kwame Osei, Director of the School, said it was set up in 1960 to train Electrical, Mechanical and Engineering (EME) corps of the Armed Forces. Capt. Osei said considering the fact that the 100 per cent achievement was scored under a state of infra-structural degradation, non-existence of material support and begging budgetary consideration, the men need to raise their heads in pride.
He said the Directorate needs a budget to run, pay examination fees, instructors' salaries and provide other institution facilities. Brig. Gbedemah presented certificates to the soldiers. GNA
