Fifty-Two Lives Perish In Motor Accidents

Winneba (C/R), Nov. 4, GNA - Fifty-Two people lost their lives through fatal motor accidents in the Awutu-Effutu-Senya District within the past two years.

In all, 169 accident cases were recorded in the district during the period under review of which 28 were fatal. Fifty-Eight victims received serious injuries, while 414 also had minor injuries.

Mr Nicholas Gasu, District Police Commander told a group of officers and students of the Armed Forces Staff College, who visited the Awutu-Effutu-Senya District as part of their tour of the Central Region. The tour, which has become an annual affair, enabled the students and staff of the college, to learn a lot about security, health, education, and food situations in the district. Mr Gasu said four armed robbers were apprehended during the same period, adding that, measures had already been taken by his outfit to curb the crime wave.

He blamed the cause of accidents in the area on reckless driving and other human errors and said in September this year, more than forty drivers were arrested for various traffic offences. Out of the number, 27 were prosecuted and fined various sums of money, Mr Gasu added.

Dr K. Morrison, District Director of Health Services and Technical Advisor to the District Mutual Health Insurance Scheme and Felix Kwei-Tagoe, Chairman of the Scheme's Board of Directors, jointly enlightened th e group on the situation of the health insurance scheme in the district. He said that, a lot was being done to ensure effective take-off of the scheme in the district and advised people in the area to embrace the scheme and endeavour to pay their premiums to make the scheme financially sustainable.

Mr J. K. Acquah, District Social Welfare Officer and Madam Mercy Apppiah-Emissahof, the National Council on Women and Development (NCWD) also briefed the group on the perception of people in the district on the Domestic Violent Bill.

A representative of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA) also educated the visitors on food security situation in the district. Mr Peter Derey, District Co-ordinating Director for Awutu-Effutu-Senya, thanked the group for the visit, adding that, the interaction would go a long way to encourage stakeholders of the selected state institutions to do more to improve the lot of the district.
