The Kaneshie market in the Greater Accra region is on the verge of collapse due to improper management of garbage that is gradually taking over the place, the market queen, Mad. Lydia Akor Akwei has stated.

The market, according to her used to be the most well-ordered and popular in the capital where people across the region buy their food items, but the story has changed as the image of the market has been dented by heaps of refuse.

Roads that lead to the market are always engulfed with heaps of refuse making it difficult for drivers and commuters to ply the route, which make the market unappealing to patrons.

Speaking to Onua FM, Madam Lydia Akor Akwei puts the blame squarely on the doorstep of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA).

She explained that, the surrounding communities have no dumping sites and city authorities have also failed to provide them with refuse containers for garbage, hence they have resorted to dumping refuse in the market for the traders to clear.

The queen of the traders was highly disappointed that city authorities have ignored their petitions to get the issue addressed.

She also articulated her fret over choked gutters that leads to flooding in the market whenever it rains, and appealed to the government to expedite actions to desilt the gutters before the rainy season.

“We have lost our capitals through these means…so we are strongly pleading with the government to save us from this calamity”.
