International students can opt to complete their academic work in their countries despite Ghana’s plans to open borders for final years to return says Vice-Chancellors Ghana.

Chairman of Vice-Chancellors Ghana, Professor Ebenezer Oduro Owusu told Citinews that special teaching and learning arrangements have been put in place for students who wish to remain abroad.

“If for any reason, an international student just like any Ghanaian student feels he or she is safe wherever he or she is and has no problem with access, he or she is free to stay and go through the semester,” Prof Owusu noted.

The appropriate authorities have access to the details of final year international students and have hinted preparedness to open the country’s borders to accommodate them.

The Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has said arrangements are being made with the Ministry of Education in this regard.

As the fate of local students hangs in the balance with regards to how tertiary education is going to run, Prof. Owusu said the University’s governing body is considering the use of more innovative teaching and learning approaches.

According to him, this move will allow universities to make room for them since they constitute a significant majority of the tertiary education population.

“We cannot be stuck in our old ways of doing things. The whole world is moving; running. If you decide to crawl, obviously you will never catch up,” he cautioned.
