Fire destroys students' hall and property at UDS

Nyankpala, (N/R), October 28, GNA- Eight students of the University for Development Studies (UDS) at the Nyankpala Campus near Tamale, lost their books and other personal items worth about 20 million cedis when fire gutted their hall on Monday while they were at lectures.

Personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) Tamale, who went to put out the fire, said the fire was caused by an electrical fault. Mr Innocent Y. Lawson, Deputy Dean of Agriculture of the University, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Nyankpala that before the fire service men arrived at the campus, the students and fire volunteers of the Savanna Agricultural Research Institute (SARI) had already put out the fire.

He said following the incident, the GNFS officials advised that fire extinguishers be installed at lecture halls, dormitories and the library so that they could be used in the event of any fire outbreak. He appealed to benevolent organizations and individuals for assistance to rehabilitate the affected students.
