First Lady calls for training of more health personnel

First Lady Lordina Mahama has pledged her commitment to see to the building and completion of the Presbyterian Midwifery Training School for the people of Duayaw Nkwanta in the Brong Ahafo Region.

Speaking at the Fundraising ceremony in aid of the building at Duayaw Nkwanta, Mrs Mahama said the idea of a Midwifery Training School is a good one and ties with Governments vision to reduce infant and maternal mortality.

The project, which she described as laudable, will also create greater opportunity for training skilled health personnel.

The idea of a Midwifery Training School at Duayaw Nkwanta dates back to the early 1947 during the rule of the then King Nana Boakye Tromo.

The idea for the school was borne out of the fact that there was high rate of maternal mortality in the area. Though it has not been fully achieved, the new Omanhene Nana Boakye Yiadom said they would not rest on their ores to see to the fulfillment of the project.

He said seeing that the First Lady is passionate about health issues especially infant and maternal health, the Presbyterian Church and the chiefs and people in the area will continue to liaise with her in this light.

He asked the First Lady, to help with the realization of this dream by helping with the edifice especially an administrative block or students’ accommodation to house not less than six hundred students.

The First Lady Lordina Mahama said the school would help the country in its quest to achieve MDG five of reducing maternal mortality.

She added that the Country currently has about 30,000 trained nurses and other Para medical personnel.

She said while this appears large there is the need to train more to meet the growing population.

The Chairperson of Brong Ahafo Presbyterian, Kwadzo Owusu Sarpong commended the First Lady for fighting a good cause in reducing maternal mortality.

He asked her not to relent on her efforts in helping towards the realization of the project.
