The chiefs and people of northern Volta who are calling for a split of the region have held their maiden conference in view of the proposed Oti region.

The conference which was under the auspices of the Krachiwura Nana Mprah Besemuna III saw renowned chiefs from all districts in that part of the region to discuss the need for a split.

The Krachiwura who was Chairman of the occasion explained the benefits the people will derive if the new region is created.

For his part, Nana Barima Owusu-Afari, said the proposed Oti region will have enough resources to promote agriculture, infrastructural development, education, job creation, health among others to better the lives of the indigenes.

He was quick to add that resource flow from the central government to the Volta region will not be affected with the creation of the Oti region.

A legal practitioner, Lawyer Kwaku Addea, underscored the need for the chiefs to educate their people on the creation of the Oti region.

He disclosed that the suggested Oti region could be created if “50% of registered voters living in that catchment area of the new region turn out to vote and 80% out of the 50% vote YES in favour of the new region.”

Former Volta regional Minister, Hon Hellen Ntoso, also assured the chiefs of full support from the Volta Caucus in parliament.

Also present at the conference were the petitioners from Buem-Krachi District, Chiefs of Nawuri of Kpandai District, Deputy Minister Designate for Water Resources and Sanitation, Volta Regional Minister, Dr Letsa, Hon Gyato and some MPs from the area.
