A 37-year-old fisherman, John Asabutey has drowned in the Volta Lake at Kudikope, a fishing community in the Asuogyaman District of the Eastern region.
The incident happened on May 27, 2019, however, the body is yet to be retrieved despite an incessant search by a joint team of National Disaster and Management Organization (NADMO) and local divers in the area.
Information gathered indicate the deceased was part of three fishermen who went fishing, however, caught up in a violent storm causing their canoe to capsize. Two of the fishermen managed to swim to safety but the deceased could not.
NADMO officials in the district are worried over cases of canoe accidents in the area. On May 26, 2019, a day before the latest incident, a decomposing body of a man was retrieved.
NADMO officials attribute the increasing incident to failure by the canoe users to adhere to safety mechanisms particularly on the use of life jacket.
