Badaabour (Ash), Feb 12, GNA- Some inhabitants of five communities along River Offin, are reported to be polluting the river through the use of chemicals for fishing.
This situation has brought hardship to communities downstream whose only source of water is the Offin as they now find it difficult to get water.
The communities are Badaabour, Kwame-Dwaa, Kyenkyentaa, Apuyeam and Kyereyaaso, all in the Atwima district.
Mr Michael Manu, chairman of the Atwima District Fire Volunteers, who made this known to the Ghana News Agency at Bedaabour on Wednesday, named the affected communities as Brosankro, Beposo, Ntabanu and Bompe. He has therefore cautioned the public to be wary of fresh water fish they purchase from open market since the perpetrators of this act send the fish they catch to Kumasi, Nyinahin, Nkawie and nearby markets for sale.
Mr Manu also appealed to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Atwima district assembly and the security agencies to mount operations in these areas to arrest the culprits.
