Five arrested for supplying arms to land guards

Accra, June 14, GNA - Two Police Officers and three civilians, including a chief, suspected to have been supplying arms and ammunition to land guards at Gbawe in the Greater Accra Region, are currently helping the Police in investigations into an alleged illegal arms supply.

Mr Angwubutoge Awuni, National Police Public Relations Officer, who disclosed this in Accra on Monday said the five, who were arrested on a tip-off, have been remanded in Police custody after appearing before an Accra circuit court.

The suspects are Constables Tetteh Nartey, 36, and Fred Allotey, 32, both of the Ghana Police Service and Eric Hammond, 26, a civilian employee of the Ghana Police Service.

The rest are Nii Commey Abbey, 46, Chief of Gbawe Gonsey, caretaker of Gbawe stool lands and former assemblyman for the area and Kpakpa Quartey, 30, an employee of the Gbawe Stone Quarry.

Mr Awuni said the arrests are in fulfilment of the pledge by the Police Administration to clamp down on the activities of land guards in Accra. "Currently, the Police are still investigating the matter and we urge the general public to inform us on the activities of land guards to ensure a successful operation.

" Mr Awuni reminded chiefs in the metropolis of the directive by the Police Administration to them to put their houses in order and stop land guards from operating in their areas "otherwise we will go in and enforce the law."
