Five arrested in connection with Abiriw shooting

Akropong Akuapem (E/R), Feb. 1, GNA - The Akropong police have arreste= d five people in connection with a shooting incident at Abiriw in the Eastern Region. The five suspects whose names were not disclosed to the media for security reasons are assisting the police in their investigations. Speaking to the Ghana News Agency in an interview at Akropong, the Divisional Crime Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Tony Addepa said the five who were suspected to be part of a mob that shot at some young men from Abiriw were arrested in their hideouts at Krutiase, Abenawia, Sanfo and Dawu.

However, one Agya Adu who is a prime suspect of the shooting incident which claimed one life and led to two others sustaining various degrees of wounds is on the run.

ASP Addepa gave the assurance that the police would do all it could to bring all the perpetrators of the crime to book. He commended the chiefs and people of Abiriw for remaining calm since the incident occurred.

It would be recalled that on January 27 some young men numbering about eight went to work on a disputed land claimed by the people of Abiriw and Dawu, compelling a mob from Dawu to open fire on them without provocation. The two injured people are receiving treatment at the Tetteh Quarshie Memorial Hospital at Mampong.

The mob kidnapped a man from Abiriw, who was found dead in the bush on Thursday, January 28, with bullet wounds.
