Five die, 12 sustain injury in motor accident

Accra, July 7, GNA - Five people died on the spot while 12 others sustained various degrees of injury when two buses collided at the Beeyeman traffic light on the Graphic Road in Accra on Thursday morning. Some of the victims were passengers travelling from Damanko in the Volta Region to Kokomba Market in Accra at about 0430 hours.

Chief Superintendent Victor Tandoh in charge of the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Unit, told the Ghana News Agency in an interview in Accra that a Neoplan bus with registration number GR 1315 A was heading towards the Agbogbloshie road when it collided with an Nissan Urvan bus with registration number GT 6449 N, loaded with passengers from Mallam to Accra Central.

"The two drivers failed to drive cautiously and as a result collided at the time the traffic light was blinking," he said. Chief Supt. Tandoh said three females and two males including the driver of the Nissan Urvan bus, identified as Jonathan MacCarthy lost their lives.

He said the bodies had been deposited at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital mortuary while the injured were receiving treatment. Some of the injured passengers have been identified as Gifty Ankrah, 30; Kofi Boateng, 35; Victoria Yeboah, 38; Rebecca Lawson, 39 and Faustina Mensah, 40.

The rest are Bedrah Timothy, 45; Ofukumor Adarka Abola, 48; Kpakpo Allotey, 52 and Joseph Armah, 56.
