Abono (Ash), Aug. 17, GNA - The Most Reverend Thomas Kwaku Mensah, Catholic Bishop of Obuasi, on Tuesday cut the sod for the commencement of a 500 million-cedi prayer and retreat centre for the Obuasi Diocese at Abono, a resort town near Lake Bosomtwe in the Bosomtwe-Atwima-Kwanwoma District.
The project is being solely funded by Nana Anthony Opoku Acheampong, chief of Krobo in the Kwabre District and member of the Church.
His philanthropic spirit had inspired Mr Alex Gyan Fosu, a Kumasi-based businessman to also purchase an electricity transformer valued at 48 million cedis to extend electricity to the centre. The sod-cutting ceremony coincided with the celebration of Holy Mass for the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Mary. Bishop Mensah said the aim of the feast was to put the Catholic youth on the cutting edge of evangelism. He urged the youth to do away with immoral acts such as indecent dressing and be respectful, truthful while also abiding by the basic tenets of the Catholic Church. The Bishop also spoke against the legalisation of abortion in the country saying that it was against the laws of God.
