Five inmates at Nsawam Prison have reportedly been transferred to another cell following an alleged plot to poison former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

Dr Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, a senior aide to Wontumi, confirmed the report in an interview with GhanaWeb on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, saying the alleged plot came to light after someone reportedly overheard the inmates discussing plans to poison the politician.

According to him, Wontumi informed him about the incident during a conversation about his health following a court appearance on Tuesday, October 27, 2026.

Dr Boakye-Danquah said he had also visited the prison over the weekend on an errand for Wontumi’s lawyer, Samuel Atta Akyea.

He explained that the person who allegedly overheard the conversation alerted Wontumi, raising concerns about the politician’s safety while in custody.

The aide said he contacted the officer in charge of the prison, who confirmed the incident and disclosed that investigations had begun.

“I contacted the officer in charge, and he confirmed it and assured me that investigations were ongoing. The officer said a committee has been set up to probe the incident,” Dr Boakye-Danquah said.

He added that the five inmates had been moved to a different cell as investigations continued.

The aide, however, said he did not know the identities of the inmates allegedly involved in the plot.

Despite the reported threat, Dr Boakye-Danquah said Wontumi remained calm and was not afraid.

“Chairman Wontumi is not frightened,” he said, recounting the politician’s response to the alleged plot.

He also expressed confidence that the alleged plan would fail.

“But we know the good God we serve will not let the plan of the evil one prevail,” he said.

Dr Boakye-Danquah further disclosed that he was expected to visit Nsawam Prison on Wednesday morning to check on Wontumi’s welfare.

The disclosure comes as the former NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman marks 100 days in prison.
