The late Ghanaian lawyer and politician, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, popularly known as Sir John, who was the former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party in 2015 predicted a win for their flagbearer Nana Akufo-Addo ahead of the presidential elections in 2016.

Speaking in an interview on the Delay Show, Sir John who was confident of a win for the then opposition NPP in the presidential elections said: “It is God who appoints rulers, Nana Akufo-Addo will become president in 2016, God will manifest through him”.

His predictions came to pass as the NPP’s flagbearer was able to unseat President John Dramani Mahama by accumulating 53.5% votes as against Mahama’s 44.4% of the total votes cast.

The 2016 elections is considered as a historical win for the NPP who managed to make John Mahama the first 'one-term president" in the history of Ghana's politics.

Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie who passed on, on July 1, 2020, after battling with Coronavirus, was until his death the Chief Executive Officer of the Forestry Commission of Ghana. He was formerly the head of legitimate administrations at the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation under the John Kuffour administration.

Tributes have since poured in after news of the death of Sir John broke on Wednesday, July 1, 2020.

President Akufo-Addo said he received the news of the sudden demise of their former party executive with great shock and deep sadness. Paying tribute to Sir John, he wrote, “My wife Rebecca and I extend our deepest condolences to his entire family. Sakora Wonoo has lost a valiant son. He will be widely missed...may the Good Lord bless him, and give him a peaceful place of abode in His Bosom until the Last Day of the Resurrection when we shall all meet again”.
