Kumasi, Oct. 11, GNA - Severe flooding at the Kumasi Central Market following a heavy rainfall on Monday led to the destruction of goods running into thousands of Ghana Cedis.

Huge quantities of wax print, children's clothing, toiletry, rice, biscuits, footwear, and provisions were destroyed as water inundated many of the stores.

Gutters running through the market were reported to have suddenly turned into roaring rivers.

There were, however, no casualties.

The rains started about 1620 hours and lasted for a little over an hou= r. Some traders who spoke to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) said the extent of the flooding was scary and could not remember the last time there was such a deluge.

Madam Ama Serwaah, a cloth seller, said many of them waded through water at the waist-level to safety.

Others had to pay a fee of GH¢1.00 to be transported to high grounds by truck pushers.

Mr Kwabena Opoku, a second-hand clothes dealer, said the situation could have been averted if the gutters and drains had not been blocked with garbage.
